Good Old Days

Ok so whenever I visit my parents i always drag them to Cabramatta, who would have thought this place I used to think was stinky and dirty is one of my most favouritist places to go to get great woks and steamers as well as asian sauces etc for cheap!

As well as that where are you going to get stir fried noodles etc for $6-$8! Cheap and unbelieveably authentic and delicious!

We go to our usual place Pho Minh not for Beef Pho (which is great as well) but for the stir fried noodles (for the family) and special rice with pork, egg and other pork things for me. This place never fails to disappoint, seriously.

My Brothers Stir Fry with rice noodles and beef - I really wish i knew the English Name.....but i dont

My dad's stir fry with egg noodles

My Rice with pork, egg, some other pork thing and pickled carrots and cucumber (yuk hate cucumber)

Late Night Snacks

As I was visiting my family for my Dads bday I was obvisouly in the neighbourhood! Vi who live sin thie neighbourhood gives me a call at 10:30pm wanting to gossip and share some laughs over a coffee/hot chocolate. As I am originally from the west and there is absolutely nothing open past 6pm it was hard to figure out where to go but then we remembered a Teenage hangout we hadnet been too in about 7 years! Rashays!! yes they have moved to a crappier location but hey it still serves our purpose.

I ordered Nutella Pancakes and a long blck while Vi ordered the Banana Split and a Hot Chocolate.

Nutella Pancakes - 3 pancakes covered in Nutella, Nuts and Maple Syrup with Ice Cream and Cream. Sounds good? yeah...well it wasnt, kind of too sweet and Maccas Hot Cakes texture but it was doable.

Banana Split (Vi's Opinion) - 'ok where is the Banana? OMG its so small!! I cant believe it thats it??!!'. And yes there was a truckload of mashmellows as well as that the Hot CHocolate was very very bland.

The best thing about it all was the guy who was serving us was actually really good, unintrusive and pleasant. I used to remember Rashey being open to about 3am but last night we were kicked out at 1am (I know but there was no where else to go!). Following that we went to Vi's and watched Sex and the City DVD's <3.

Whats left in the cupboards??

Being on Holidays (going back to work on Monday BOOOO) has left the kitchen cupoboards absolutely bare and due to this and the fact we have been eating out so much....no money!

So what can I make? its Thursday night and im tired.... it was pretty hard to decide considering we have nothing but i was able with find ingrediants for a pasta sauce with met and 4 beans.

In the end it was pretty tasty, i used passata, crushed tomatos, tomato paste, beef mince, 4 bean mix (too much liquid so needed more ingredients), garlic, onion and carrots parmesan cheese and mozzerella. It worked out pretty well and I had some garlic bread we got on special and i grated some parmesance cheese on it....delicious and filling.

Mix it up BABY!!

Room Nine - Surry Hills

Met up with Marc and Vi this morning as they were coming back from New Castle where they spent their New Years. We decided on Fifi Fourveax for a much craved Eggs Benedicts but sadly....they were closed. Where else....?? The was Bills but theys currently on my Banned List as I have given it 3 chances and 3 times their food took 2 hours to get to me and other tables were getting their meals before us (even though they all had ordered the typical scrambled eggs, corn fritters etc) so what else...? We continued down Crown Street and decided on Room Nine.

Started off with a Long Black which can always be abit of a hit and miss but went down very well here it was delicious!
Eddie decided on the Omlette with chorizo, red capsicum and spinach where as Marc, Vi and myself decided on the Eggs Benedict with Ham. The eggs were cooked quite well the yolks were runny while the whites were cooked through, I would have hoped the bread would have been the Turkish bread that the man with scrambled eggs was having but alas it wasnt and the Hollandaise sauce which alright was nothing special. The service on the otherhand was great and the prices were cheap so I cant really complain.

Omlette with Chorizo, red capsicum and spinach with tomato chutney - $12

Eggs Benedict with Ham - $12.90

Room Nine - City Crown Motel
289 Crown Street
Surry Hills, NSW 2010

Happy Holidays = happy eating

Boy have I been successfully expanding my stomach!

I dont think have had a home cooked meal...ok in only about 3-4 days no make that 2 lol.
New Years day brought about issues with food and me getting any access to any.

The five of us visited Newtown thinking - 'It's just gotta be open....' welll yes there were cafes open but sadly yes they were all extremely packed! We walked and walked and finally got in at El Bahsa where their coffee machine (damn damn damn) was broken so Rod and I had to go next door to Citrus to get a coffee. I must mention right now - Citrus, absolutely on my banned list. Rude slow service, thats all i have to say, we even got a customer who wanted a coffee at El Bahsa's NOT go to to Citrus for their coffee - Great Success!!

Ahh El Bahsa wasnt that good either, the bacon was so salty, the eggs were fried (with no other options), the toast wasnt buttered, I got an end of tomato (not that I even like tomato but seriously), the sausage...well that was pretty good and the berlotti beans which i ordered as a side were hard but definately the meal saviour.

The evening was ThaiTanic where I accidentally did not take any pics but i must mention they took their Tofu Tods off the menu to mine and Rod's dismay however they still made some for us yey!! The thing about ThaiTanics Tofu Tods is that they are crispy on the outside and oozingly soft on the inside YUM other places like Newtown Thai II have tofu Tods that could be used as weapons - they are rock hard.

I also ordered Kee Mao noodles as I felt like i needed more chilli in my life - Big Mistake. This was like noodles covered in small fresh chillis i was crying, blowing my nose, drinking litres of water all at the same time. Very very hot more hot than i could ever imagine - i really need to just stick to my Pad See Eww.

Happy New Years

Happy New Year!

First stop was dinner at Alla's as she was doing most of the cooking but asked that everyone bring something (even though she made enought o feed a very large army) I made Pumpkin and Rosemary Arancini Balls (from Bill Grangers recipe) with a Tomato dipping sauce (from i think the ABC website) that was a complete hit!

Pumpkin and Rosemary Arancini Balls
600g pumpkin, peeled, cut into 1.5cm cubes

2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to shallow-fry
Sea salt, freshly ground pepper, to taste
1.25 litres (5 cups) chicken stock
1 small brown onion, finely diced
2 garlic cloves, crushed
2 tsp freshly chopped rosemary
1 tsp sea salt50g butter
330g (1 1/2 cups) arborio rice
¼ cup freshly grated parmesan100g mozzarella, cut into 25 cubes (about 5mm)
1 cup plain flour
3 eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups dried breadcrumbs

Preheat oven to 190C. Place the pumpkin on a large baking tray lined with non-stick paper, drizzle with a tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden. Remove and set aside.

Place the stock in a large saucepan and bring to the boil over a high heat. Reduce the heat and keep at simmering point. Place a large, heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat and add the remaining olive oil, onion, garlic, rosemary, salt and half the butter. Stir until the onion is translucent. Add the rice and stir for 1-2 minutes, or until the rice is well coated.
Gradually add all the simmering stock, a cupful at a time, stirring constantly and making sure it is absorbed before you add more. This should take 20 minutes and the rice should be al dente and creamy. Stir through the remaining butter, roasted pumpkin and parmesan. Set aside to cool.

Roasted Pumpkin Added

Remove a heaped tablespoon of the rice and, with damp hands, roll it into a ball. Place a small cube of mozzarella into the ball and reshape. Repeat the process until you've used all the cheese and all the rice mixture, then chill for 20 minutes.

Ready to be coated and fried

Place the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in three separate shallow bowls. Roll each risotto ball in the flour, in the egg mixture and finally in the breadcrumbs to coat. Shallow-fry in olive oil until golden brown and drain on absorbent paper.

Makes 25

Semi-dried tomato dip
1 tbs olive oil1 medium brown onion, halved, coarsely chopped
1 x 340g jar semi-dried tomatoes (I used the Always Fresh brand), drained
80ml (1/3 cup) water1 tbs tomato paste

To make semi-dried tomato dip, heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until soft. Add tomatoes, water and tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until heated through and mixture thickens. Place tomato mixture in the jug of a blender and blend until almost smooth. Transfer to a serving bowl and set aside.Place the flour, eggs and breadcrumbs in three separate shallow bowls. Roll each risotto ball in the flour, in the egg mixture and finally in the breadcrumbs to coat. Shallow-fry in olive oil until golden brown and drain on absorbent paper.

We we took the Arancini Balls and Sauce along with ourselves to Allas dinner party where as I said above she cooked anough to feed an army...there was only 7 of us attending this intimate do.
